About this course

Learn how language is used to socialise, communicate and persuade, and consider the language of literary and non-literary texts. You can choose to gain an internationally recognised initial English language teaching qualification, opening up opportunities to work anywhere in the world.You develop your skills in communication, analysis, evaluation and problem-solving through dialogue with experts in linguistics and your peers. You develop your preferred areas of study research skills before undertaking an independent research project in your final year.

This must include at least 2 A Levels or equivalent BTEC qualifications. For example:BBC at A Level.DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies.

This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career.Live projectsIn your second year you will undertake a work-based project, typically involving in engaging in volunteering or a work placement and reflecting on the role that language performs in this activity. Students have worked with Every Sheffield Child Articulate and Literate (ESCAL), Portland Work, Freeman College, Sheffield Hallam's business incubation unit the Hatchery, Sheffield Children's Hospital, SHU Life magazine, Heeley City Farm, Grimm and Co and Byron Wood Primary School. You can also choose to study abroad for one semester at one of our partner universities.Field tripsStudents in English have visited areas of interest such as London's Globe Theatre, Sheffield's Crucible Theatre and country houses including Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster.
