Equip yourself with the visionary and practical skills necessary for boundary-pushing fashion product development.Learn through a combination of group and individual projects, seminars and placements within industry.Have the opportunity to study abroad — Erasmus funding is available for European placements.Fashion design requires you to stay ahead of developing trends in aesthetics and technology. We emphasise innovation and collaboration through individual and group projects, assignments and presentations related to the latest developments in the industry, helping you develop the confidence to take creative risks and preparing you for a fulfilling career in fashion.

About this course

You gain an understanding of what is expected from a future career in fashion design by taking part in a diverse range of activities. As you develop your understanding of the research, design and manufacture process you're encouraged to consider learning opportunities that reflect your personal interests and professional aspirations.

There are opportunities to study abroad at one of our partner universities with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus programme.

This must include at least 64 points from two A levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:BBC at A Level.DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies.

How you learn

This course is part of the Sheffield Institute of Arts — our creative community within Sheffield Hallam.

You learn through

group and individual tutorials interactive -based lectures seminars practical activity-based sessions industry-facing projects creative thinking work shops studio-based project workwork review sessions

Applied learning

Work placements

You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. Previous students have worked with Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Reiss and ASOS.

Live projects

During the course you gain valuable practical experience from working on projects with fashion companies. In the past students have worked on a real brief with design and marketing departments at Ted Baker, Amanda Wakeley and Vivienne Westwood, with awards such as cash prizes or a work placement within the industry.

Field trips

All students are offered the opportunity to visit fashion centres including London, Paris and Amsterdam to visit exhibitions, studios and salons. Previous trips have involved a behind-the-scenes visit to Burberry's headquarters and flagship store, an exclusive talk from a world-leading couturier at the Fashion and Textile Museum, and a tour of Paris ateliers.We currently receive exclusive tickets for a select number of students to attend the Burberry Catwalk shows in London. It's an incredible opportunity to visit the backstage of a real fashion show, view garments up close, and gain real insight from working designers in the industry.

Competitions

Students are encouraged to enter national and international competitions such as the International Talent Support Contest and the Fashion Awareness Direct Competition to help gain exposure in the fashion industry. Recent students have been finalists and winners of various such competitions, which saw them showcasing their work at Graduate Fashion Week and other prestigious events.
