    Bachelor's degree

Course description
This course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS) and is ideal if you are currently working in a school as a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) or other teaching assistant and you have a foundation degree.
The course enables you to gain the skills and knowledge needed to be an effective teacher, while you remain in your work setting. You study English, mathematics and science teaching, as well as developing your own knowledge of these subjects. As you progress, you develop your understanding of teaching across the early years foundation stage curriculum.
In the first year you are introduced to the core curriculum areas of mathematics, English and science as well as creativity. You also complete a six week placement, which usually takes place in your host setting. Specialist early reading and numeracy placements help further develop these key skills.
In the second year you continue studying mathematics, English and science, and examine inclusive learning environments. You also complete an enquiry project relevant to your or your schools professional development. You complete another six-week placement but in a different setting and age group to year one. There are also specialist four day placements and you may be able to attend teaching conferences with other students.
You are taught in joint groups with students on the primary education course, with teaching from early years specialists. An academic tutor provides personal support during the course and a tutor also visits you during placements.
During the placement periods, it may be possible to exchange with a student from your placement school, so staff levels are maintained in both schools.
Support from your employing school is essential to successfully complete the course. You have to meet all the standards as specified by the National College for Teaching and Leadership to be recommended for qualified teacher status.
