The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies (with Foundation Year) is designed to help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in your studies with the University of Wolverhampton at degree level and beyond. During your Foundation Year you will develop skills appropriate to University study such as finding and using information, working collaboratively with others, challenging and debating ideas and expressing yourself with greater confidence.

The Early Childhood Studies degree will develop your skills and knowledge required for a range of careers working with children, their families and the services that support them.  The course will draw on a range of disciplines such as history, psychology, education, sociology, welfare and social policy.

The course is suitable for people new to this area or experienced staff searching for career development.  The course takes account of the ecology of children’s lives in studying the complexities of family life and of children’s development from conception onwards and the significance of childhood across cultures and societies.

About this course

Please note the first year of this course will be taught at Wolverhampton City Campus, followed by three years at Walsall Campus. 

Teaching and learning is designed to support digital literacy through use of a range of on-line tools, such as virtual learning environments and e-portfolios and you are encouraged to share knowledge and be enterprising with your ideas.

PLACEMENT

The placement journey on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies course was developed following consultation between the then Department for Education & Skills (DfES 2004 now DfE) and the Early Childhood Studies Degree National Network. The placement modules at each level of study provides students with an opportunity to work alongside professional practitioners in Ofsted registered settings, developing their knowledge, skills and competence in working with young children.

Students will be required to identify and attend an appropriate registered setting (0-8 years) in order to experience, participate in and develop competence in a range of tasks associated with practice in an early years setting. They will be expected to reflect on and develop their practice during these modules during the course.

150 hours at level 4 (with a named professional partner) linking to the module 'Developing Professionals'
150 hours at level 5 (with a named professional partner) linking to the module 'Professional Studies' 
50 hours at level 6 (with professional partner)) linking to the module 'Leading Quality'

Students will be expected to reflect on and develop their practice during these modules during the course demonstrating both knowledge and understanding of appropriate ideas relating to the care and education of children as they apply to practice, as well as an ability to work with children and adults in a particular setting.

Students successfully completing the assessed module at level 5 will be awarded BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies which meets the DfE full and relevant criteria

We will start by introducing the concept of inclusive education practice and encouraging you to explore your own beliefs and values. This module will introduce you to the topic of child development. After studying the different types of development and exploring the underlying nature/nurture debate, the content of this module will focus on the social and emotional development of children. The issue of how and why children form attachment bonds to their carers (usually family members) will be examined and then the consequences of having these bonds broken, or not forming close attachment bonds at all, will be explored. How pre-school education affects children’s development will then be covered, looking at the advantages and disadvantages of different types of day-care. There will also be a consideration of how wider society and government policy impact on children’s lives. You will learn several established theories in this topic area as well as the research evidence that supports or does not support these theories. A consideration of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities will be included throughout the module.

You will explore historical and contemporary theories relevant to different aspects of child development by drawing on research and literature. As part of your learning you will be encouraged to consider factors that may affect the lives of babies and young children in relation to their growth and development, such as the complexities of family life and risks within the environment.

This module will provide you with the opportunity to question and evaluate the role of play in childhood by examining historical and contemporary theories and concepts. You will also explore the body of knowledge that has accumulated in recent years, which identifies the importance of play as a fundamental right for children. You will be required to use your placement/workplace experience to investigate the role of play in curricula frameworks, the family as well as explore international perspectives. You will also examine your own principles and values in relation to working with children to facilitate play activities by researching the role of the professional, the use of play spaces and planning and assessment. This will enable you to gain knowledge of ways to develop quality play provision and how the quality of play can be evaluated.
