This module is about developing ideas for film and video production. All films begin with an idea which may ultimately find its expression in narrative or non-narrative form, in fiction or non-fiction. This module will equip you with a set of techniques you can use to come up with, evaluate and develop ideas for practical projects. In the course of the module you will create several ideas, some of which you will develop into script or treatment. Your ideas will be developed through writing, visual forms and/or performance.

An introduction to studio production and field practice. Using the vehicle of the television magazine programme format you will work in collaborative teams to devise and record 'as if live' a magazine programme (news/factual/entertainment/edutainment/children's). You will be introduced to the magazine programme workflow from concept, through development, to recording, scheduling and transmission. In so doing you will also work in collaborative teams to devise, research, shoot and edit at least one short feature for inclusion in the magazine programme. There will be opportunities for you to work in one or more production roles to further develop your production skills.

The module focuses on film and television form and visual style. It provides an introduction to the key elements of screen language; which is examined through sections on mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound. The module provides the tools for textual analysis of film and television. In addition the module introduces academic skills in constructing bibliographies and in using databases for film and television studies on the internet.

This module explores the ideas and craft techniques of video and film editing. You will learn how editing can determine the way a visual story is perceived, and you will experiment with a range of post-production techniques. You will apply your understanding to a series of editing challenges, and develop an appreciation of the organisational and workflow aspects of post-production.

This module builds upon your experience of storytelling through the use of camera and editing, and develops concepts of mise en scène, character, and the production techniques necessary to support the production of screen drama. You will work in production teams to realise a number of dramatic short film exercises.

This module will give you an introduction to the creative, technical and organisational aspects of video production. Through a series of practical exercises, you will be introduced to the elements of visual storytelling, camera operations, shooting for editing, and shooting as “live”.

Compositing files together with software and hardware, a minimum of three layers to create a new film with sound.

This module will facilitate your practical and creative engagement in a range of the practices and techniques related to multi-camera studio production. You will explore genres and formats of multi-camera production and then through practical exercises you will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to develop a multi-camera production from conception through to delivery of a ‘live’ recording of a television programme.

This module aims to explore and analyse what is meant by & lsquo;representation& rsquo;. It engages with themes and debates concerning the conventional techniques, the effects, and the politics of representation and cinema/television, and uses these tools to analyse the filmic representations of social constructs such as gender, & lsquo;race& rsquo;, class and sexual identity.

This module aims to provide opportunities for you to extend your knowledge of narrative structures and to explore approaches to narrative production. Specifically, this will involve experimenting with the order and form of stories that you will adapt for the screen from provided scripts/screenplays or screenplays created during the module. You will work in production teams to produce at least one narrative film for assessment submission at the end of the module.

This module explores professional approaches to writing scripts for film and television, and gives you the experience of creating and developing a short screenplay.
