This course is the same as the one which is delivered on-campus at the University of Northampton. Students take the same modules and complete the same assessments. This course is designed for students for whom English is a second language and who have studied an English Language or Business English course to HND level or equivalent (for example the Chinese Dazhuan Diploma). The student's previous qualification may not have included enough business-related content to gain entry onto our BA (Hons) Business and Management Top-up degree. Students can obtain a BA (Hons) degree in one year. All classes take place at Birkbeck College (Bloomsbury campus) and students have full access to library facilities.

About this course

Applicants require a relevant Pearson or SQA HND or an equivalent qualification. Equivalent overseas qualifications, such as the Chinese Dazhuan Diploma, are also accepted for admission onto the course. Students who have successfully completed the first 2 years of a 3-year degree, or 3 years of a 4-year degree may also be eligible. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of their English language capability. The level required for study on Bachelor’s degree courses is IELTS 6.0 (minimum category score of 5.5) or equivalent.

Course programme

The course offers a balance between developing English language skills and knowledge of business. It is designed to develop students’ understanding of cross cultural and global management. The Business Communication module uses topic areas which focus on the linguistic skills needed to engage in business. It also offers students with the opportunity to engage in effective communication in various business environments in addition to developing awareness of different cultural approaches in business situations. Students further improve their English linguistic skills within the Advanced Business English Language Skills module.

All modules are compulsory. Students complete 120 credits.

Graduates who have English as a Second Language studied to degree level will find career opportunities in many commercial and public sector organisations in their home country and throughout the world.
