An interpreter requires more than a working knowledge of two or more languages; s/he also needs to develop a range of linguistic and cognitive skills to cope with the task of understanding and speaking/signing two different languages consecutively and simultaneously. This module provides the theoretical and practical basis for developing those initial skills. Models of interpreting and the process of interpreting will be examined including the socio-linguistic, psychological and practical implications of those models. Lectures will include theoretical discussions, individual, pair, group work and tasks. Students will be guided and encouraged to further develop their skills of accepting and giving constructive feedback to fellow students. Students will be strongly encouraged to be pro-active in their personal further development of these learning experiences and be independently spontaneous and creative in exploring and finding solutions to the myriad of interpretative dilemmas.
