This long established and highly respected course will train you to become a British Sign Language/English Interpreter and help to enhance the value of the role you play working with, or for, the D/deaf community. You will have the opportunity to develop your British Sign Language and Interpreting skills to an enhanced level using a range of in class and online interactive and innovative teaching and learning methods. You will engage in intensive study incorporating practical, analytical and theoretical aspects of culture, language, interpreting and professional skills, and have the opportunity to undertake a work placement* in your third year.

The main aim of this module is to enhance a student& rsquo;s language abilities, (receptive and production). The module will enable students to communicate effectively in a range of social situations. The module requires students to demonstrate that they can produce and understand BSL to the required standard and be able to analyse and discuss fundamental features of BSL and English.

An interpreter requires more than a working knowledge of two or more languages; s/he also needs to develop a range of linguistic and cognitive skills to cope with the task of understanding and speaking/signing two different languages consecutively and simultaneously. This module provides the theoretical and practical basis for developing those initial skills. Models of interpreting and the process of interpreting will be examined including the socio-linguistic, psychological and practical implications of those models. Lectures will include theoretical discussions, individual, pair, group work and tasks. Students will be guided and encouraged to further develop their skills of accepting and giving constructive feedback to fellow students. Students will be strongly encouraged to be pro-active in their personal further development of these learning experiences and be independently spontaneous and creative in exploring and finding solutions to the myriad of interpretative dilemmas.
