About this course

During this course you will study a number of practical modules and learn physical and vocal performance skills. You’ll be taught by a range of professional experts, and once you master the core elements of performing, you’ll begin to look at unusual and experimental approaches to performance.

In the theoretical and practical perspectives modules, you’ll look at the various ways that performance can be conceived and consider its importance in society, and have the opportunity to research into areas that interest you.

Throughout this degree you’ll create a series of shows, films, short scenes and devised performances. In your third year, you’ll set up your own theatre company and devise a production that you will manage from conception through to venue booking, marketing and performance.

You can take optional modules, which give you the chance to specialise in an area of your choosing. This could be directing for performance or devising and writing. You’ll also be able to learn about how to work with cameras and gain invaluable knowledge of editing and filming.

When you finish this course you’ll have become a thinking practitioner in the performing arts. You’ll have also developed the necessary skills and experience for a successful career across the arts and media sectors. As well as acting and performance, this might include working in theatre in education, outreach groups and arts marketing . Our graduates enjoy careers in performance, and have taken further training to set up their own theatre companies or become teachers or dramatherapists.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the 3-year undergraduate programme, or those who do not feel fully prepared for a Level 4 course, will be considered for the 4-year programme including a Foundation Year.

Course programme

This module map provides a list of the modules that make up your course.

Each module is worth a specified number of credits (typically either 15 or 30 credits for undergraduate courses). Compulsory (or ‘core’) modules cover key subject knowledge, while ‘option’ modules enable you to develop your own interests. For a full-time course you must take modules worth a total of 120 credits at each level of the course. The number of option modules you can take depends on the number of compulsory modules at each level. You can find more information about how your course is structured via the Academic Advice pages.

Our teaching is informed by research and employer requirements, and modules change periodically to reflect developments in the subject area. In addition, where we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an option module, this may not be offered. If an option module does not run, we will advise you as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative module.
