About this course

Over the three year course, you will undertake University-based learning at Walsall Campus, and you will spend at least 120 days (24 weeks) divided over the course between different placements across the 5-11 age range within the 3-11 age phase.

Your University tutor team is available to assist you throughout your training, supporting development of reflection.

Every effort is made to ensure that high-quality school placements are provided to you, facilitating learning through observing, co-teaching and being observed by experienced teachers in the classroom. We try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools but our first concern is to ensure that you have a high quality school placement that can provide a range of experiences. Additional training will therefore take place in partner schools other than your 'attachment' schools. Support is available from your University Tutor throughout your training, plus from experienced teachers accredited by the University as school based tutors.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways including group presentations, written assignments, portfolio/learning journals/evidence bundles, RPD (QTS) and exams.

BA (Hons): Programme Structure

Modules in the first year (level 4) focus on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science along with ICT and the wider curriculum, and Professional Studies.

During your second year (level 5) you will study the same areas as in year one, but in greater depth. You will have the opportunity to develop your classroom skills further with a longer placement.

In your third year (level 6) skills in all areas are refined and developed and are then put into practice with two placements, with a final placement of seven weeks.

Module: 4PE007

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module aims to inspire and motivate student teachers, equipping them with a pedagogical understanding of how to teach English in the primary school and early years’ settings while developing their subject knowledge. Students will identify ideas and concepts that underpin teaching and learning theories and examine issues from a number of perspectives, demonstrating their understanding of the diverse needs of learners. Students will engage in independent reading allowing them to evaluate and reflect on their practice. Students will develop a secure knowledge and understanding of: the aims, principles, content and design of relevant curriculum documentation and guidance (e.g. the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage); how children’s learning in English can be affected by a range of factors, including their physical, intellectual, linguistic, social, cultural and emotional development. Students will be able to plan, teach and evaluate literacy lessons in the primary classroom and/or early years’ settings; and evaluate their own practice and that of other practitioners to improve their teaching and the children’s learning in English. Students will be able to consider learning theories and relate this to effective learning and teaching in English; communicate effectively and accurately (at appropriate levels in oral, visual and written forms) with children, colleagues, parents and carers; confidently organise teaching and learning resources such as children’s literature and understand how to use this effectively in the classroom.

Module: 4PE009

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module aims to prepare trainees to teach mathematics in primary education and early years by ensuring students acquire secure subject, pedagogical and curricular knowledge appropriate to the phase of their course. It will also introduce trainees to assessment methods relevant to primary education (3-11). The module will provide a secure knowledge and understanding of the subject content as set out in current curriculum documents as it applies to the three stages of primary education. The module aims to introduce key concepts such as ‘mastery’ approaches to teaching and will also make connections with other Yr 1 modules (such as Professional Studies) by examining how key components, such as assessment or planning, relate to mathematics.

Module: 4PE008

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

The module will provide students with an introduction to the attitudes, skills and knowledge that support a rich and investigative approach to teaching and learning science in both Early Years’ and Primary settings. The module will allow the students to develop their own subject knowledge whilst also considering effective pedagogy to encourage learners to explore, enquire and find answers to their questions. Through studying the underpinning concepts within the subjects of chemistry, biology and physics students will develop their own confidence and enthusiasm for teaching Primary, Early Years’ and Foundation stage curriculums. A strong focus of this module is practical investigation and this element will be a major part of the sessions. Throughout sessions students will develop an understanding of children’s misconceptions and the need to assess children’s prior understanding to address misconceptions effectively. Students will consider how planning and assessment opportunities can further pupils’ understanding and development of investigative skills.

This module builds on the Year 1 maths module (4PE009) and its purpose is to develop further subject, pedagogical and curricular knowledge and understanding which underpins teaching and learning of Mathematics. There is a greater emphasis on the mathematics taught in KS2 but all age phases are examined. Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of national documentation, planning, assessment and suggested teaching approaches (such as mastery). Students will be expected to develop their understanding of theory and practice in relation to classroom teaching, showing understanding at both a relational and instruction level. The module will specifically support students in developing more robust teaching strategies and will also help them consider the needs of specific groups of students, such as those with SEND, those who have EAL and those who may be designated as ‘gifted’.

Student teachers are expected to be able to demonstrate a sensitivity for, and an ability to respond to, the diverse needs of learners and play an active role in developing praxes to meet the needs of all children and their individual differences in their classrooms, schools and wider society. As well as continuing student teachers' learning journeys in systematic synthetic phonics and their developing pedagogies for use in the literate classroom, there are emphases on the use of language as a tool of communication, digital literacy, performance, personalisation and inclusion.
