The Sociology and Politics degree gives students the opportunity to analyse and understand the major political and sociological traditions through which we can make sense of the modern world. This degree also focuses upon the debates concerning developments around economic, political and cultural globalisation.

Students are encouraged to apply their sociological and political knowledge to a range of key contemporary issues and to understand the impact such issues have upon citizenship, popular culture, education and employment in a national and international context.

Students have the opportunity to undertake community placements as part of the course. Such experiences broaden your academic knowledge, deepen your appreciation of civic responsibility and enhance opportunities for employment.

The module aims to explore some of the ways in which women in the past have challenged their subordination, both by demanding& nbsp;their inclusion in public, political and professional life and& nbsp;through involvement in movements for wider social and political reform. The module will include case study material from Britain and across the British Empire& nbsp;-& nbsp;including India and the Caribbean - to showcase historic campaigns& nbsp;including women& #39;s opposition to slavery, the struggle for women& #39;s higher education,& nbsp;the reform of sexual conduct& nbsp;and the fight for women& #39;s suffrage.

The module considers the purpose of sociological theory (theoretical thinking), the Enlightenment and the rise of sociological theory. Put simply, classical theory helps explain the present.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the main issues in international relations (IR) at the current time and to provide an intellectual framework to enable you to better understand our contemporary world and analyse and interpret international developments. This will follow on modules to further practical development of British Sign Language. This module will familiarise students with the complex relationship between the media and the manufacture of deviance resulting in social stigma. It focuses upon media representations of 'deviance', criminality and the construction of social stigma. The module provides students with an understanding of the role of the media in the creation of moral panics and examines the influence of these representations on popular opinion, social policies and legal decision-making.

It examines the most important ideologies of the contemporary period both individually and comparatively. The module seeks to explore the purpose of political ideology, the relationship between political ideas and political practice, as well as the social context that underpins the origin and development of the ideologies, drawing on examples from both European and extra-European contexts.

This module introduces social science students to quantitative research methods. There are three aspects to the module. First, are introduced to quantitative methods: history, philosophy of science and ethics. Second students undertake a subject appropriate research project involving the formulation of a hypothesis, the writing of survey questions and the testing of the data obtained through the questionnaire. Three, students construct a project proposal in preparation for final year dissertation work.

This module will explore a selection of twentieth and twenty first century theoretical perspectives.& nbsp; In this way, it builds on the work of the classical theorists considered in the compulsory level 4 module, 4SL007.& nbsp; In order to impart some continuity and coherence into the subject matter, attention will be paid to the emphasis of the theorists on structure and agency in society.& nbsp; Rather than treating the subject matter as an abstract body of knowledge, the module will seek to emphasize and the students will be assessed in how social theory can explain contemporary societies.
