This one-year top-up focuses on developing a set of skills to help you establish a career within the rapidly growing music industry with a music industry employer, or in a self employed capacity and is ideal if you have already completed some higher education study in Sound Production of Music Technology, or Foundation Degree (Arts) Music Performance Technologies.

About this course

Throughout the course, you will develop strong business acumen and the skills needed to support music events. You will complete a sound recording project and undetake in-depth study of live sound design, live sound reinforcement, and music for image – a particularly creative and popular aspect of the course. You will be exposed to a wide cross section of skills relevant to gaining a foothold in the music industry, concentrating on topics such as the music business, entrepreneurial skills, music and mass communications and live sound system design.

A final semester module designed specifically to provide learners with an outward facing experience that prepares key employability skills for the the world of work. You are expected to work in teams towards a happening, the only aim here being that you have to make something happen. You are encouraged to think freely about the aims of the project and align aims to their individual needs of professional and personal development. This module aims to encourage the development of skills, knowledge and personal attributes necessary to secure gainful employment in music by being proactive, developmental and creative through engagement with music in a range of professional contexts.The module will foster an enterprising spirit amongst the student body in this last module before graduation, as students come together to focus on Creative Group work which will be demonstrated via a happening.

The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to confront and explore unfamiliar and new musical sounds and concepts, through researching areas of specific interest to you, in film or animation. Your written report will inform the way you assimilate your knowledge and understanding of musical instruments/voices/other media, in combination with your use of computer software in recording/editing/synthesizing, to enable you to create original music for image.

The Professional Project is the culmination of your undergraduate degree course and it will enable you to work independently in an area that excites and interests you. In so doing you will be able to engage with a substantial programme of independent study that enables you to define and explore in some depth, a topic relating to your course or intended future employment, as well as developing advanced skills in managing an extended project. A Project must be completed successfully in order for a student to qualify for an Honours degree.

The module aims to foster dialogue on and develop skills in the design and evaluation of musical interfaces. You will see and critique a variety of existing approaches, then develop your own original design in software and/or hardware. This may take the form of a novel digital musical instrument, an interactive sound toy, or a digital interface for music learning/learning more traditional musical skills. Finally, you will make an initial evaluation of your design, and consider possibilities for subsequent deeper evaluation.

This module allows you to take your existing knowledge of music production and engineering and apply it to the university recording studios. Working both independently and in teams you will explore research culture and the art and technology surrounding record production. Genre and practitioner-specific research will inform your planning and practice, leading to high-quality studio recordings with clear evaluation and reflection.


The BSc Sound Production (Top-Up) degree prepares you for a career in the music industry through engagement with a range of workshops, lectures and seminars that develop entrepreneurial skills and music production expertise. Experienced staff will encourage and stimulate your interest and passion for the music industry and will help sharpen your employability profile during your studies. As a provider of music education, we are aware of the challenges you face as a learner in the 21st century so this course has been structured in a way that is contemporary, providing flexible study patterns to suit you. You will gain a fascinating insight into the world of music, broadening your horizons for lifelong learning whilst developing a creative and entrepreneurial flare ready to respond to the technological and artistic innovations of the industry.

As part of our strategy to grow and adapt to the pace of the creative arts industry we are constantly adjusting our provision and service to our students. Additional Field trips - £1000 - All Performing Arts students will have an opportunity to partake in the bi-annual trip to New York, costs vary according to cohort size and programme of events but can be expected to be in the order of £800 - £1,000. There will be opportunities to attend Musicals and Theatre performances in London and across the UK, recent examples: Hair, Kinky Boots, Hamilton, Rent

Additional Events/Performances - £250 - Final performances and productions are by individual design as as such costs in this area are difficult to quantify. Potential spend areas: venue hire; props; costumes; choreographers; sets etc

Applicants are required to hold 120 credits at Level 4 and 5 (240 credits in total) from either Foundation Degree Sound Production or Foundation Degree Creative Music Production.

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process. Please see for further information.
