This part-time course is aimed at those who are caring for older people in a care setting. The course will reflect local, national and international agendas and your assignment work will focus on developing your practice.
The course can be accessed at degree or Master's level, with the assignment expectations different for each level. The aim is to improve service and care delivery for the growing population aged 65 years and over.

Course programme

Course details Study is part-time and units can also be accessed individually as part of our continuing professional development (CPD) flexible framework. You can complete one of the following awards: BA (Hons) Care of Older People Postgraduate Certificate in Care of Older People (three units) Postgraduate Diploma in the Care of Older People (six units) MA Care of Older People On this course you will usually be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners and demonstrators. Core units Physical Health Needs of Older People: During this unit you will explore the complex physical health needs associated with ageing. This covers analysing care strategies to enable high quality care delivery. You'll consider best practice around common illnesses in old age and learn to identify and manage frailty. Mental Health in Older People: Throughout this module you will develop an understanding of mental health wellbeing in older people and consider approaches to the assessing mental health needs. You'll discuss how ageing affects an individual's mental health and how common mental health problems are presented. You'll also consider the effects mental health problems have on families and carers and look at integrated policy approaches to caring older people. Living Well with Dementia: This unit enables you to understand the causes of dementia and critically analyse your practice. The focus will be on seeing the person beyond the diagnosis and adopting a more humanised approach to care and service delivery. Speakers from a variety of professional groups and services will present their own perspective and experiences of working with people with dementia and their families. You'll also understand how assessments and interventions are used in the care of people with dementia, analyse pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of those with a dementia and consider the legal and ethical issues that may arise when caring for those with dementia. Leading and Developing Older People’s Services: Gain skills in devising a strategy in response to current older people's policy drivers and global issues. You'll analyse and evaluate your organisation's environment and identify options to review, offering justification for your proposal. You'll also develop leading and management skills. Compassionate Care through Humanisation: This unit explores how cultural and societal influences can impact on compassionate care. You'll consider perceptions on ageing and reflect on the impact this can have on care delivery. The humanisation framework developed by Todres et al (2009) will be examined and used to guide ethically-based care. You'll also examine how care offered and received can be humanising and de-humanising. Locating and Evaluating Evidence: You will develop your analytic skills in the context of evidence-based practice. You'll be able to identify and explicitly define a problem arising from your professional practice, construct an effective search strategy in relation to the problem identified, use appropriate tools for the critical appraisal of evidence and finally present a critical evaluation of the literature in relation to the problem identified. BA students only. Exploring and Evaluating Evidence: You'll explore the knowledge and approaches to research and knowledge production. You'll learn about research methodologies and how to review the research of others. This unit is for PGCert, PG Dip and MA students only. If you would like to complete the full Master's, you will complete the above units as well as two additional units: Preparing for your Service Improvement Project: A service improvement project (SIP) aims to better a service or services. You'll learn about an appropriate, systematic and justified methodology in a complex professional area to design an original, intellectually challenging and in-depth SIP action plan for your professional context. Service Improvement Project: You'll show your autonomous and independent ability in a complex professional context to expand or redefine existing knowledge or develop new approaches to service improvement, and then evaluate your SIP's impact.
