OUTLINE OF DEGREE STRUCTURE

This degree can be undertaken full-time over four years or part-time over a minimum of eight years.

The Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) requires the completion of units of study to the value of 192 credit points, comprising:

  • 18 credit points in core units of study, comprising two junior core units (12 credit points); and one senior six credit point capstone unit of study;
  • a minimum of 24 credit points in units of study from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Table A subject areas);
  • a minimum of 12 credit points in units of study from the Faculty of Science (Table 1 subject areas);
  • two compulsory majors: one selected from the 'Major I' subject areas ' and one from the 'Major II' subject areas;
  • a maximum of 96 credit points in junior units of study (1000 level units of study); and
  • a minimum of 108 credit points in units of study from the University of Sydney Business School (a maximum of 84 credit points from non-Business School subject areas).

Core units of study

Students must complete two core junior units of study (1000 level) in their first year of study and a senior capstone unit (3000 level) in their final semester of study.

(i) Junior core units:

  • BUSS1001 Understanding Business, and
  • BUSS1002 The Business Environment.

(ii) Senior (capstone) unit:

  • BUSS3500 Integrated Business Applications

Compulsory units of study

Students must also complete at least 24 credit points of study from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (`Table A' subject areas) and at least 12 credit points of study from the Faculty of Science (`Table 1' subject areas).

Majors

Students are required to complete two majors selected from `Major I' and `Major II' subject areas. For 2016, the available majors are as follows:

Major I subject areas (Business School):

  • Accounting,
  • Business Analytics,
  • Business Information Systems,
  • Commercial Law,
  • Finance,
  • Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management,
  • International Business,
  • Management, and
  • Marketing.

Major II subject areas:

  • any subject area listed under Major I,
  • a subject area offered by the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment,
  • a subject area from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences e.g. Agricultural Economics, Economics, Econometrics, Digital Cultures, History, Social Policy or a language; or
  • a subject area from the Faculty of Science e.g. Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Financial Mathematics and Statistics, Geography or Psychology.

The `Major II' major must be different to the one chosen from the 'Major I subject areas'.
Students can also complete an optional third major from Business School or any other faculty of the University of Sydney (subject to degree requirements) e.g. an Education major from the Faculty of Education and Social Work or electives from the Sydney College of the Arts (SCA).
