PrerequisitesUnits 3 & 4: A study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in EAL. Selection into the Bachelor of Music is based on talent as well as academic performance. Applicants must complete an audition and musicianship test. For your audition to be at a competitive standard, it is recommended that the repertoire you perform be at the equivalent standard of Grade 7 AMEB (Grade 8 ABRSM) on your instrument or Grade 5 AMEB for voice. The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM) is based across the University’s Parkville and Southbank campuses. It offers outstanding teaching and performance facilities. You will take classes at either Soutbank, or both Parkville and Southbank, depending on your area of specialisation, allowing you to enjoy the residential, learning and social facilities at Parkville, as well as the artistic community and first-class facilities at Southbank.

The MCM is one of the most richly endowed music institutions in Australia. We have an extensive range of fee remission and bursary scholarships, prizes and awards available to both our current students and recent graduates. Some scholarships are awarded directly to high-achieving students by the MCM, and others are offered by application and evaluated on merit or financial need.

  • Depending on the area of specialisations, students receive practical tuition through weekly individual instrumental, vocal or composition lessons, instrument classes, extensive solo and ensemble performance opportunities, and regular master classes with distinguished national and international artists and teachers.Depending on the area of specialisation, there is a wide range of ensemble experiences including Chamber Music, Orchestra and Choir, Big Band, Wind Symphony, non-western ensembles (e.g., Javanese Gamelan), World Music Choir, Early Voices and many others.

  • You’ll love the Conservatorium’s active concert life, where you will learn from and be surrounded by like-minded students from all kinds of musical backgrounds. Attend regular lunchtime and evening concerts and performances by students, professionals, and visiting artists. From interactive soundscapes complementing dance performances or art installations, jazz ensemble gigs at well-known Melbourne jazz venues, through to orchestral performances in Hamer Hall or Melbourne Recital Centre – there’s always something on at the Conservatorium.
