The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) at Charles Sturt University is designed for those who already hold an approved undergraduate degree, and qualifies you to teach one or more subjects to secondary students and support their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Available as an online degree, a selection of subjects are also offered in Session 3 to either accelerate the completion of your Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) or spread your study commitments across the year. This enables further flexibility to assist in achieving your qualification in secondary education.

About this course

Subjects

For each 8 point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, residential schools, or examinations.

If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

As a Charles Sturt University student, throughout your course you have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to your discipline. This ongoing development will enable you to effectively participate in your course and graduate prepared to enter the workforce.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 192 points.Full subject list
To graduate with the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary), students must complete 192 points (24 subjects) including entry level credit.  All subjects have a value of 8 points with the exception of two subjects, one of which has a zero point value and another with  a 16 point value.  The basic course structure consists of 16 education subjects made up of 12 core subjects plus 4 restricted electives (at least 2 curriculum method subjects, and 2 further restricted electives).  Those entering the course with less than the maximum credit package must complete an additional 1-2 teaching discipline subjects depending on their background, as explained below.

Upon entry to the course, a standard credit package will be given to each student based on how well the student's undergraduate degree meets the requirements for their intended teaching area, in terms of the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) guidelines.
