Course programme

The double degree provides students with the opportunity to pursue education courses from the beginning of their university studies.
The primary focus in the first three years is on undertaking study in the two discipline areas in which the student intends to teach.
This study generally includes courses taken at Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the degree program.
These courses are taken as part of the degree program that accompanies the Bachelor of Teaching in the subject areas of the student's choice.
In each of the first three years, students also take an education course designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice.
The first and second year education courses involve observation and experience in school contexts.
The final year is taken up entirely with education studies and is commenced after the other degree is completed.
Placements cover a total of 85 days in the Adelaide metropolitan area and country South Australia.
The Bachelor of Teaching is designed primarily for students who have not already commenced university study.
Students who have commenced a degree should consider completing their degree and then applying for the Master of Teaching.
Students completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Teaching are eligible to gain credit towards a Masters of Teaching degree.
Criminal History Check: students will be required to undertake a Child-related Employment screening through the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI).
If a student fails to obtain clearance for any reason, the University cannot accept responsibility for obtaining a professional experience placement or any other professional experience activity that a student may require to complete the course of study.
Reporting Abuse and Neglect Training: students enrolled in programs in the School of Education who are completing any in-school or site observations, activities or professional experience placements, must undertake mandatory training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect prior to the commencement of the activities or placements.
In South Australia, mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect training is required of all individuals working with children and young people.
All students undertaking professional experience placements in South Australian government and non-government schools and preschools must provide documented evidence that shows they have completed all of the required training.
Information for both the DCSI Child-related Employment Screening and Reporting Abuse and Neglect courses will be made available at the time of offer.
Literacy and Numeracy Test requirements: in addition to the above, applicants are advised of the following requirements from 2017.
The Australian Government has recently introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure that they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers.
The test is a single, national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual's literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy.
All South Australian students commencing an ITE program after 1 January 2017 will be required to meet the benchmark prior to graduation.
For further information, including registration details, please check the test administrator's website at teacheredtest.
