The barber is the person in charge of hair cutting and beard shaving. His work usually takes place in the shop (commonly called barbershop or even salon), but in case of need and at the request of the customer, he can also intervene at home. The barber is a very ancient profession and in the past centuries the barbers, who performed the functions of surgeons, also practiced small surgical interventions, such as the extraction of a tooth or a bloodletting. The cut of the first beard was among the Romans a real solemn rite (depositio barbae) of initiation of the passage from adolescence to youth. The freshly cut lanugo was kept in a pyx, made of gold for the richest like Trimalcione, of other materials for the less well-off, and offered to the gods. All ' social obligation to shave only philosophers and soldiers could escape; even the slaves were forced by their master to be shaved by a tonsor, public or more economically by a servant of the house. What is certain is that no one shaved alone: curiously, many razors dating back to the prehistoric or Etruscan age were found but almost none from the Roman age: this is because while the oldest ones were in bronze and the Roman ones were preserved, they were in iron and are been consumed by rust.
