About this course

NVQ Level 2 and work experience in a salon for a minimum of 2 days per week. You must have an aptitude for practical work, good communication skills, the ability to show initiative and a high standard of personal presentation.

Barbering NVQ Level 3

Aim Level 3 is the target qualification to be recognised as a professional barber. The skills developed at Level 2 are built upon and advanced skills demonstrated which include the creative combination of techniques, business and management skills.
Content Although this is a practical course with most of your time spent working in a salon environment you will be expected to complete written work, undertake appropriate reading a compile a comprehensive portfolio of work.

This qualification includes:
· Controlling work operations
· Promoting products and services
· Consultation
· Advanced cutting
· Advanced colouring
· Creative styling and dressing
· Advanced shaving including wet shaving
· Photographic and show work

This is a work-based qualification where learners will demonstrate you are competent in a salon environment.

Progression/career opportunities
For those wishing to use their qualifications to gain employment, career opportunities include: hairdressing on a cruise liner, in a TV studio or the theatre; technical representation for a fashion house; work abroad; become a specialist artistic director or salon teacher.

Extra information You will need to buy a uniform and hair design kit. At interview you will be given full details of where you can purchase your uniform and equipment at a competitive price. Your kit will form the basis of your professional work kit and may be used when taking your own clients.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
