About this course

Candidates should have obtained average GCSE results although no specific entry qualifications are stipulated. However, a high level of interest and motivation is essential. Selection will be made on the basis of an interview and commitment to study (for both full-time and part-time study).

Course Level 2

Description
Beauty Therapy is a skilled profession that can provide a satisfying and rewarding career. NVQ level 2 is aimed at Beauty Therapists and covers skills and knowledge to become a competent therapist. Trainees will be expected to work as part of a team in a salon environment and activities will include, manicure, pedicure, facials and massage, eye treatments and waxing, associated science, theory and Health and Safety. Salons will however, expect therapist to attain level 3. Students are expected to find one weeks work experience.

On completion of training, the majority of qualified beauty therapists will usually be able to find work in a beauty centre, leisure centre or health farm. There is strong competition between the skincare and cosmetics manufacturers to sell their products to beauty salons, which means that there are opportunities to qualified therapists to find employment as sales representatives or on cruise ships.


Course Length
Full-time, Part-time - (2 evenings per week). Full certification will be gained when all 9 units have been achieved; this may take 1 year. 80% attendance is required by Awarding body.

What will I study?
Mandatory Units:

  • G1 - Support the Health, Safety & Security of the salon environment
  • G6 Promote additional Services and Products to clients
  • G8 - Develop & maintain your effectivenes at work
  • BT4 - Improve facial condition
  • BT5 - Enhance the appearance of the eyebrows & lashes.
  • BT6 - Remove & lighten hair using temporary methods
  • BT7 Manicure Treatment
  • BT8 Pedicure Treatment
  • BT9 - Provide make up treatment

    In addition theoretical topics include:-
    Understanding techniques, benefits & effects of all practical units.
  • Structure and function of the skin
  • Skin disorders and diseases
  • Skin analysis and skin types
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Skin conditions and contra-indications
  • Basic cosmetic chemistry
  • Health, safety and hygiene
    (Key skills: Communication, IT and Numeracy are an integral part of the course. Levels will be assessed on enrolment).

  • Work experience - this is a requirement for one week.

    A clean black short sleeved tunic and black trousers. Black flat heeled closed toe shoes. No jewellery (including facial jewellery) allowed with the exception of one pair of small stud type earrings. Short natural nails are essential. Order forms will be given on request at induction.


    How will I learn?
    This course will be taught using a mixture of approaches. These will include practical work in a realistic commercial salon environment. Directed learning,
    independent study
    and tutorials are included. Student centred learning will be applicable to this course and candidates will be required to use independent learning materials for home study.

    How will I be assessed?
    All units are assessed throughout the course. Practical work is assessed through performance and oral questions. Written questions, projects or assignments cover theoretical knowledge. It is necessary to build a portfolio of evidence which should include observation checklists, witness testimonies, records of practice from the workplace and photographs of completed work, etc.

    Where could it lead?
    Level 3 Beauty Therapy (Electrical or Massage route), work into industry, e.g. salon work, demonstrating, self-employment, mobile therapist, retailing/ consultants.
