Course programme

Year 1

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the beauty therapy industries. You may study the following mandatory content:

Anatomy and physiology: in this unit, you will gain an understanding of the body and to be able to apply this knowledge when carrying out a range of beauty therapy treatments. You will be introduced to the structure and functions of the skin, hair and nails to include the contra-indications that are common to these areas.

Hair removal treatments: this unit covers the practical techniques of warm and hot wax and will provide you with a clear understanding of the processes and techniques involved in preparing clients and the work area for waxing treatments.

Facial, head massage, and skin analysis: in this unit, you will understand how to carry out consultations, recognise different types of contra-indications, document clients’ needs and diagnose skin types, as well as to perform facial and head massage treatments to improve the appearance of the skin and hair. These will include: cleansing, skin warming, exfoliation, massage and mask treatments, and a head massage.

Manicure and pedicure treatments: this unit will provide you with the practical skills to be able to carry out these treatments as well as helping to improve your communication and consultation skills with clients.

Lash and brow treatments: this unit covers tinting of the eyebrows and lashes, eyebrow shaping, and the application of strip lashes. You will develop skills to enable you to apply make-up services for day and evening make up.

Additional information

You will be assessed via on-going internal practical assessments. Formative assessments will give you feedback so that you may prepare for the final summative assessment. Assessments follow a modular approach where you practice skills. Once you can do this with confidence, you complete a formative assessment, and then progress to a summative assessment on a fee-paying client. You will be informally assessed throughout the programme to track and develop your practical and client-handling skills.
