BEd (Music) with Honours
The Bachelor of Education course is offered by the RSAMD in collaboration with the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow and is approved by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Successful completion leads to the award of the degree together with a Teaching Qualification (Secondary Education).
Throughout secondary schools, music teaching is becoming more pupil-centred, more practical and much more individualised. To prepare students to cope with these demands, music education runs in parallel with teacher education, both parts of the course being equally important.
All students pursue a Principal Performance Study throughout the course and also focus on keyboard and vocal skills. There are opportunities to participate in RSAMD orchestras, ensembles and choirs.
In keeping with current and projected needs in schools, the Music Studies strand of the course emphasises practical musicianship, versatility on keyboard instruments and studies in contemporary musical techniques.
In Years 1 and 2, students are based mainly in the RSAMD, where all Music Studies are taught throughout the course. Professional teacher training takes place at the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow.
A new pathway has been created through the BEd (Music) course for students offering the following specialisms: Accordion, Clarsach, (Scottish) Flute, Fiddle, Gaelic Song, Highland Bagpipe and Percussion (snare drum/hand held percussion/drumkit).
