  • Duration

    4 Years

This extended course is perfect if you want a degree in mechatronics with computer systems engineering but don’t have the standard entry requirements.

The mechatronics with computer systems engineering programme combines principles from mechanics, electronics, control, computing, automation and robotics to design, manufacture and test smart and cognitive systems and devices, which utilise a combination of these disciplines. On this undergraduate programme you will gain knowledge of engineering processes and systems, product design, AI, machine learning, digital electronics and integration of these technologies. This will also enable you to create your own mechatronic systems that are smart and cognitive, developing them from imagination through to reality.

This programme will give you a sufficient width and depth to meet the demands of a career in mechatronics engineering and enable you to progress to the status of Chartered Engineer as well. On this course you will gain an active interest in engineering and learn how to respond to changes and developments within automation, mechanical systems, robotics and related wider engineering sector.

About this course

Our mechatronics engineering programme is a combination of maths, science, technology and management. Throughout your studies, you will acquire not only an understanding of general engineering principles but also a range of transferable skills. You have a chance to broaden and deepen your knowledge in a wide range of mechatronics engineering subjects.

The programme will enable you to obtain advanced knowledge of engineering disciplines such as, dynamics and control systems, thermofluids, applied electronics, digital communications and telecommunication networks. Along with these engineering modules, you will have the opportunity to study advance programming, systems integration and artificial intelligence and use lab equipment for your studies and project work. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to apply your skills to a range of practical problems.

You will be using simulation and application software for design and modelling, utilising our strong links with companies, and investigating real industrial problems to enhance your understanding of the profession. You will study how various systems can learn on their own and from humans, thereby developing the ability to effectively deal with their environment. You will tie in the topic of your individual final year project with one of our research groups and benefit from the expertise of our active research academics.

Some potential destinations for students are, aerospace, automotive, railways, defence, manufacturing and marine engineering. In your career you will design, develop, maintain and manage engineering systems that have the cutting-edge sophisticated technology. You will have a key role in areas such as design, research, and development, sales, production management, safety, and quality. You could apply new solutions to industrial problems using mechanical and electronic engineering and computer technology; such as for robotic vehicles for underwater exploration.
