About this course
This is a multidisciplinary research-based MSc course, designed for applicants with a biomedical, computational or mathematical background. It equips students with the necessary skills to produce effective research in computational genetics and bioinformatics. The programme is taught by experts in relevant fields within the College, and also makes use of collaborations with other researchers. For students who are interested in pursuing a PhD, this course also forms the first year of the Wellcome Trust-funded PhD programme in Theoretical Systems Biology and Bioinformatics.
All applicants must apply online. You can usually apply for up to two courses, although your second choice will only be considered if your first-choice application is unsuccessful. Most courses don't have a formal closing date, but popular courses close when they are full, so you should apply early to avoid disappointment. There may also be funding deadlines that apply to you. You will need to upload documents with your applications, which may include transcripts and degree...

Modules shown are for the current academic year, and are subject to change depending on your year of entry.
In the first term, you take modules in:
- Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
- Statistical learning
- Computing
- Mathematics and Statistical Inference
The remainder of the year is devoted to three full-time research projects, undertaken under the supervision of researchers at Imperial:
- a Computing project, in teams, to develop a substantial piece of software - the development of a functional genomics database with a web-based user interface is an example of a previous project
- a Data Analysis project, giving you the chance to work on the statistical and computational analysis of biological or biomedical datasets in collaboration with experimental/clinical groups within the College
- a Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Project, undertaken in a research lab at Imperial, and involving substantial use of bioinformatics tools and/or development of bioinformatics and systems biology methods
Many of our students progress to PhD study at top institutions both in the UK and internationally.
