An introduction to ecology and classical genetics, with an emphasis on understanding the scientific method (3h lab).
IMPORTANT NOTE: BIOL 1113 has a 3-hour lab requirement which is not delivered online. You will be required to register in an on-campus section of the lab at Acadia (only delivered during the FALL term), or provide proof that the lab has been successfully completed elsewhere. Permission may be obtained for you to participate in an Acadia BIOL 1113 lab by contacting the Head of the Biology Department. Once permission has been obtained the Biology Department will notify Open Acadia, and your registration will be finalized. If you have completed the lab at another institution, you will be required to provide a syllabus for the lab, and a transcript that contains your lab mark.

Course programme
Unlike many introductory biology courses, Dr. Eric Alcorn's course is not an overwhelming explanation of every element of biology. Instead, you'll focus on two of the three foundations of modern biology thought: ecology and genetics.
Topics include:
- The Scientific Method
- Biospheres and Biomes
- Ecosystems
- Ecology
- Mendelian Genetics
- Cell Cycles
Through this course, you'll learn about ecology and genetics topics, the use of the scientific method, and the basic field skills required for field and lab biology. Your studies will include an Environmental Reflection project, and the course is supported by a custom textbook.
