All undergraduate biology majors will receive thorough instruction in the scientific process and interpretation of scientific data along with experimental design and experience with modern instrumentation. The Bachelor of Science in Biology will provide students with a sound understanding of cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, evolution and ecology.
There are three broad subdivisions of biology that are invariably recognized: Cellular and Molecular Biology; Organismal Biology; and Evolution/Ecology. GC Biology graduates will have a knowledge and awareness of all three areas and specific knowledge regarding: the chemical composition of life, cell structure and function, molecular, Mendelian and population genetics, the diversity of life, the form and function of living systems, evolutionary theory and ecology.
GC graduates will be well prepared for pursuing careers and advanced degrees in the field of biology and environmental sciences. Research opportunities are available at the undergraduate level. The faculty view active research as an effective teaching tool. Graduates of the programs will be well-trained, have a broad perspective on current biological and/or environmental science topics and concerns and have field and laboratory experience that will make them competitive in the job market or well prepared to continue their education.

About this course
Graduates usually go into one of four career tracks: industry, for example as microbiologists, food and drug technologists, environmental consultants, laboratory technicians, biotechnologists and scientists; state and federal government, for example as entomologists, environmental scientists, plant pathologists, zoo curators, horticulturists, agronomists, fisheries, wildlife and forest conservationists; or professional self-employment as physicians, veterinarians, dentists, optometrists, environmental attorneys, landscape architects; or K-16 educators, from the junior high school to college level. A small number of graduates pursue careers as academic scientists becoming faculty at masters and doctoral degree granting institutions.
Minimum grade of C in Principles I and II (BIOL 1107/1108) is prerequisite to all Biology 2000 level courses and up.
A grade of C or better must be earned in Area F, Cognate area and 2000/3000 courses required for the major.
Unless otherwise noted, courses may not be repeated for additional academic credit. Courses may be repeated to raise a grade, but the hours credited will only count once toward total hours earned.
