About this course
The Biology IGCSE Course is designed to follow the structure of the Edexcel 4BI1 specification. In combination with other suitable IGCSE entry subjects the course is an ideal preparation for those who wish to go on to study Biology, or other biological subjects at A level.
The course is designed to give students a broad understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles and to develop skills in biological investigation and give the ability to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of modern scientific developments.
Each lesson of the Biology IGCSE course begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment tests. The course includes 13 Tutor-marked Assignments (TMA’s) including 2 Mock Exam Assignments.
We hope that students of this course will also take the opportunity to learn from the wealth of Twig resources to which this course is linked. Twig have produced more than a thousand educational films, particularly for science, maths and geography and these complement the lesson materials here to enhance the learning experience. To view the films, you will need an e-mail account, internet access and a password, supplied to you after enrolment.
There are no prerequisites for starting this course.
Please Note: We cannot accept students who are under 16 years old on this course. We do have an alternative IGCSE course option for students who are under 18. Please email us if you require additional information about this alternative course.
Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they need to keep in regular contact. The essential relationship between student and tutor begins with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan.
All tutors are fully qualified teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a degree in education. So when you enrol on a home study course you can be assured of the assistance of a professionally qualified subject specific tutor.
We don't set a limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA's) in every course. These help the student consolidate the learning he or she has done and prepare for examinations.
All tutors have a local rate telephone number such as a 0845 number. This means that when you phone your tutor it will only cost you the price of a local call. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.
