The Master's programme deals with the development and diversity of species, the relationship between organisms and their environment, and processes in populations and ecosystems.

The programme is a direct continuation of the programme options Biology and Nature and environment from the Bachelor's programme. The programme gives an introduction to relevant research for the programme option you choose. This involves learning advanced research methods and how to work with scientific literature.

The programme results in a research based thesis which will provide you with experience in field and laboratory work, conducting written reports, and presenting and statistically analysing research results.

About this course

Gain in-depth insight into evolutionary biology, ecology, toxicology, or marine biology (cf. specific targets for the individual programme options).
The ability to work independently both in the field and the laboratory.
The ability to conduct independent analyses of academic data.
A critical understanding of academic literature.
The ability to produce spoken and written presentations of academic topics and research results.

in biological or environmental research institutes and industries.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in research at an academic institution or in industry, you can continue with PhD studies at a Norwegian institution or an institution abroad. Most universities and many publicly financed institutions all over the world focus on research related to the topics you have studied during the Master’s programme in Biology.

Structure

The programme's duration is four semesters. This entails courses (60 ECTS credits) and the Master’s thesis (60 ECTS credits).

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

At the beginning of the first semester, you also have to attend four mandatory e-learning courses in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and a practical course in firesafety as follows:

  • HMS0501 Safety and Physical Environment
  • HMS0502 Positive Learning Environment
  • HMS0503 Laboratory Safety
  • HMS0504 Field Safety
  • HMS0507 Fire Safety

You are exempted from these HSE course requirements, if you have already completed the equivalent HSE courses in relation to a bachelor programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO.
