Biology is the scientific study of life itself. It involves knowledge of the wide range of living things and an understanding of the life processes that they all share in common. These processes, collectively termed metabolism, enable species to survive in their environment, to reproduce and to evolve. The Salters-Nuffield Biology specification contextualises these topics with a focus on the Human species. At Chichester we study the Edexcel syllabus.

How will I study?
At Chichester you will study the Edexcel syllabus. The course is divided into eight topics. Topic 1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk, Topic 2: Genes and Health, Topic 3: Voice of the Genome, Topic 4: Biodiversity & Natural Resources, Topic 5: On the Wild Side, Topic 6:Immunity, Infection and Forensics, Topic 7: Run for your life, Topic 8: Grey Matter. The practical skills are delivered in an embedded style throughout the two years of the course and are assessed through a Practical Endorsement component which requires each student to competently undertake 12 practical assessments. While the Practical Endorsement is a non exam component, students will be credited with a pass/fail depending upon level of competency. Students should note that there is a significant Level 2 maths requirement embedded within the 2 year specification and students will be expected to continually work on developing their mathematical skills.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught for two sessions a week within a dedicated lab and lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical work. You will be expected to read the materials required for the coming week prior to each lesson in order to better understand the material. There will be weekly homework and in class assessment in addition to general revision and research to be completed.
How will I be assessed?
The content of the eight taught modules and embedded practical skills are assessed through three 2 hour written papers at the end of the two year linear course. You will be assessed at the end of year one to see if you can progress to year two.
