Predominately taking units appropriate for a career in Biological Sciences from the Pearson HND/HNC Diploma in Applied Biology (which will be the title of the final award given to students on this programme). This course is suitable for those who have already decided that they wish to enter this area of work or who wish to progress further to higher education upon completion of the course. Upon successful completion of this course students will be awarded the Pearson BTEC HND/HNC Diploma in Applied Biology (QCF). To be awarded the BTEC Level 4 HNC, you must achieve a minimum of 120 credits and for Level 5 HND a minimum 240 credits. The HND in Biomedical Science course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the applied biology sector and also offers Progression from this course may be into or within employment in biological sciences and related industries. It will also enable progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in a related area. Course programme

Applicants should normally be at least 18 years of age. Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course, or a work-based course, such as NVQ 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship with a minimum 120 UCAS points achieved. Mature students may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector. Course Content The Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Applied Biology is a qualification with a minimum of 120 credits of which 75 credits are mandatory core. The Level 5 HND Diploma in Applied Biology is a qualification with a minimum of 240 credits of which 95 credits are mandatory core. Year 1 - Mandatory Core Units: • Cell Biology - Level 4 • Biochemistry of Macromolecules & Metabolic Pathways - Level 5 • Physiology of Cellular Systems in Animals - Level 4 • Laboratory Techniques for Applied Biology - Level 4 • Analysis of Scientific Data and Information - Level 4 Optional Units: • Chemistry for Applied Biologists - Level 4 • Environmental Monitoring and Analysis - Level 5 • Personal and Professional Development - Level 5 Upon successful completion of year 1 full-time students can be awarded a stand alone HNC. Year 2 - Mandatory Core Units (HND only): • Project for Applied Science (20 credits) -Level 5 Optional Units: • Neurophysiology & Homeostatic Control of the Human Body - Level 5 • Employability Skills - Level 5 • Pharmacological Principles of Drug Actions - Level 5 • Analytical Chemistry (Unit 12 from Applied Chemistry) - Level 5 • Molecular Biology and Genetics - Level 5 • Medical Microbiology - Level 5 • Statistics for Experimental Design - Level 5 How will I be assessed? The course is predominantly assessed through the completion of assignment projects. Much of the study will require work outside of formal classes, so self-motivation and good time management skills are essential. As a guideline you are advised that a 15-credit unit approximates to a learning time of 150 hours Progression Depending on the entry requirements of individual universities successful completion of the course will enable you to apply to top up to a range of degree level courses in related subject areas. Fees The course fees for all students for this course will be £5250 per annum for 2016/17.
