The course provides a route which leads to an IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science)-accredited award for those currently working in Pathology laboratories. Students will complete their registration portfolio alongside undertaking the award. The work-based modules are designed to support the gathering of evidence to demonstrate achievement of the standards of proficiency. This part time award supports development of the academic knowledge alongside developing skills and competence in the workplace.

Throughout the programme specialist knowledge is steadily introduced in the areas of anatomy and physiology, disease biology, molecular pathology and cell biology. Building upon these core topics the course then focuses upon each of the main pathology disciplines, expanding your appreciation of the role of biomedical science in the understanding of disease presentation, diagnosis, prognosis and choice of patient treatment. An appreciation of good professional is also embedded in the course.

About this course

This course will:
· Enable students to develop their knowledge of the aetiology of disease with its presentation, diagnosis and treatment through the study of underpinning scientific subjects and through the study of biomedical science specialist subjects
· Develop scientific, intellectual and practical skills to provide graduates with the abilities to plan and carry out laboratory investigations in biomedical science and to evaluate evidence underpinning practice
· Foster the development of the qualities needed in situations requiring the exercise of professionalism, personal responsibility and decision-making

2019 Entry

GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above (equivalencies not accepted)
If you do not hold a GCSE grade C/4+/equivalence in Mathematics you will be strongly advised to complete your Mathematics GCSE alongside your studies at the University
Students wishing to take a hospital laboratory placement as part of the Applied Biomedical Science route must have GCSE Maths at C/4 or above or, Level 2 Essential / Key Skill in Application of Number or an equivalent mathematics qualification

Course programme

Your first year will provide you with a sound grounding in all basic science subjects and includes topics such as the form and function of the human body, disease biology, cell biology and genetics plus microbiology and immunology.

You will then progress to examine human physiology, molecular pathology, and the biology and investigation of disease, also undertaking practical sessions. After your second year of study, you may choose to take up an optional additional work placement year and move onto the Applied Biomedical Science route. Selection for this opportunity is highly competitive and provides an excellent opportunity for you to gain both valuable laboratory experience and complete the Institute of Biomedical Science’s Registration Training Portfolio, before continuing into your final year. Here, you will undertake a research project and also study key clinical laboratory disciplines, including cellular pathology and clinical genetics, haematology and transfusion science, clinical biochemistry and immunology, and medical microbiology.
