This extremely popular course opens up opportunities for entry into a variety of careers associated with the field of biomedical science. Throughout the programme specialist knowledge is steadily introduced in the areas of anatomy and physiology, disease biology, molecular pathology and cell biology. Building upon these core topics the course then focuses upon each of the main pathology disciplines, expanding your appreciation of the role of biomedical science in the understanding of disease presentation, diagnosis, prognosis and choice of patient treatment. An appreciation of good professional practice and the development of essential employability skills required for today’s competitive job market are also embedded in the course.

Important practical techniques that will be covered on the course include DNA analysis, antibiotic resistance, tissue identification, blood grouping and coagulation tests. In addition, you will have the opportunity to undertake an honours research project in your final year, allowing you to develop your skills further in an area of interest to you.

Opportunities exist for students on the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course to undertake work placements in an NHS hospital laboratory. Students who are successful in obtaining placements will be eligible to transfer to the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science.

Please note: Students cannot directly apply at admission for entry to this route. Students are only transferred to this route of study after successful completion of the competitive entry process. The number of placements is limited and therefore you cannot be guaranteed a place on this course

Course programme

Your first year will provide you with a sound grounding in all basic science subjects and includes topics such as the form and function of the human body, disease biology, cell biology and genetics plus microbiology and immunology.

You will then progress to examine human physiology, molecular pathology, and the biology and investigation of disease, also undertaking practical sessions. After your second year of study, you may choose to take up an optional additional work placement year and move onto the Applied Biomedical Science route. Selection for this opportunity is highly competitive and provides an excellent opportunity for you to gain both valuable laboratory experience and complete the Institute of Biomedical Science’s Registration Training Portfolio, before continuing into your final year. Here, you will undertake a research project and also study key clinical laboratory disciplines, including cellular pathology and clinical genetics, haematology and transfusion science, clinical biochemistry and immunology, and medical microbiology.

information for Biomedical Sciece/MD applicants:

There is an opportunity to study medicine (MD degree). Our Combined Biomedical Science pathway provides you with a route to gaining a Medical Doctorate. This route gives you the opportunity to become a medical doctor.

The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) School of Medicine and University of Wolverhampton offer a combined BSc Biomedical Science and MD degree Program that enables you to be accepted to both the Biomedical Science and Medical School courses through a single joint admission process. This program enables students to begin the Basic Science curriculum of the medical program prior to completing the requirements of the BSc in Biomedical Science. Awarding of the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree is contingent upon successful completion of both the prescribed Biomedical Science undergraduate and Medical School curriculum requirements. The coursework of the two institutions is separate. The BSc degree is awarded entirely by University of Wolverhampton and the MD degree is awarded entirely by UHSA.

Studies for the medical degree consist of two major areas - Basic Science Courses and Clinical Science Rotations. During the Basic Science portion of the medical curriculum, students come to the UHSA campus in Antigua for 8 weeks each summer following the academic year at University of Wolverhampton. At the end of the third summer, students will be required to attend an additional year of Basic Science studies at UHSA in Antigua. The clinical rotations begin when the student has obtained the BSc degree and successfully completed all basic science courses at UHSA.
