Frankfurt School is always building capacities in developing\/emerging countries through technical assistance and executive education programmes.<\/p>\n

Students are not often aware of the range of services and products this school has in the sphere of climate and finance, which suit perfectly the career paths of those who work in sectors as development economics and natural resource governance.<\/p>\n

For Example,\u00a0Jonas Hern\u00e1n Fleer, a former student of the Programme Manager Sustainable World Academy, stated earlier at Frankfurt School’s website:<\/p>\n

“I previously worked together with local stakeholders (incl. indigenous communities) to strengthen capacities in effective territorial management and climate change adaptation. Approaches to accessing financial resources (e.g. payments for ecosystem services, access and benefit-sharing agreements) were largely discussed and communities made substantial progress in negotiating effective and beneficial arrangements, which supports them to build their resilience against a changing climate and living conditions. However, this was only a fraction of what I learned about (climate) finance later at FS”.<\/p>\n

His testimonial is relevant for those who are seeking to boost their employability and enrich their experience in these areas.<\/p>\n

How he got involved into climate adaptation finance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Jonas has been working for\u00a0four years at Frankfurt School’s Sustainable World, he had the chance to extend his knowledge of financial aspects in order to promote\u00a0climate-resilient and sustainable development. At the very beginning, he started in a project named\u00a0the Adaptation Finance Fellowship Programme (AFFP), which seeks to build capacities of young, talented and promising future leaders in climate adaptation finance and to establish a global network of likeminded people to foster innovations to make our world, and vulnerable countries, regions and peoples especially, more climate-resilient.<\/p>\n

With this, he made great connections with talented people across the world. During the 18 months of the programme, he built strong relations. Regardless of the differences between cultures and countries, the goal of everyone was the same, and they took part in\u00a0classroom training sessions in Frankfurt and Bangkok, as well as the e-learning course Certified Expert in Climate Adaptation Finance<\/a><\/p>\n

At his participation during the Adaptation Futures 2018 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, together with his project partner, the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and the project donor, the International Research Development Centre (IDRC), they won a conference session where fellows presented emerging lessons from climate insurance and risk pooling research in Africa and Asia. This was only one of the many other results and impacts he achieved with this project.<\/p>\n

“Now, having our first fellow graduates in September 2018, I feel honoured to be part of their learning journey and to have supported and promoted them through advisory and lecturing” Jonas adds.<\/p>\n

Fellows have reported great changes in their professional life thanks to\u00a0Frankfurt School’s Sustainable World, like incorporating\u00a0climate-related issues into daily management decisions and operations and getting jobs at dream companies like\u00a0Green Climate Fund (GCF) or World Bank (WB), where their work has a direct impact for the future of the climate finance agenda.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next? Lessons learned and new challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Frankfurt School\u00a0Sustainable World Academy\u00a0really makes a difference and can achieve substantial impact. According to Jonas, “the exchange of experience \u2013 for example on flood management, climate-resilient city planning, climate risk insurance and risk pools, or business cases for adaptation \u2013 between trainers, experts, the fellows and us generates new ideas, approaches and project ideas”.<\/p>\n
