The boatswain is the most experienced of the non-commissioned officers assigned to the deck service of a military ship (pilots) and of the men assigned to the deck services of the merchant navy. Unlike the Italian Navy where it is not a hierarchical rank but a position, in some navies the boatswain is a military rank.
