A modular workshop over 12hrs for health care
workers exploring aspects of mental health in learning
disabilities, challenging behaviours and autism.
Staff who support individuals with learning disabilities in residential care, day centres or in their own home.
Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to• Identify the relevant and most common types of mental health problems
• Understand why people with learning disabilities are vulnerable to developing
mental health problems
• Adopt a holistic approach to the assessment of mental illness. Understand their own
and others roles in assessment
• Be aware of the different interventions available
• Have an understanding of some of the legal and ethical issues
• An understanding of autistic spectrum disorder
• Identifying what causes the condition
• Developing empathy for the client with the disorder
• Understand what approaches are available to help people with autism
• Understand what behaviours are challenging
• Understand key causes of challenging behaviour
• Understand the type of interventions and basic de-escalation techniques
• Make an effective plan
• Understand why people self harm
