About this course

Maths and English GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C / B) or higher or an equivalent qualification are ideally required. In order to be selected for this apprenticeship, you will need to have a passion for working in a hands-on environment within this exciting trade. Finally, you must have the drive to complete the demands of the apprenticeship course and become a skilled worker. You will also need to demonstrate a commitment to learning while working and spending 20% of your working hours completing off-the-job training.

Course programme

Year 1

You will learn about health, safety and environmental issues faced on construction sites, and how to communicate with others on the job. You will also learn practical skills specific to brickwork, including how to build and repair structures, walls, chimneys, walkways and foundations using various types of blocks and brick. Their work can range from a house extension to a major stadium project.

Year 2

Within the second year you will complete your practical assessments and also focus on completing your competencies within your NVQ portfolio. This will be your responsibility to complete your job knowledge questions and also ensure that you cover the range of work required for your assessor to observe you in your working environment.

Additional information

Multiple choice question papers, covering knowledge outcomes. Practical assignments, covering performance outcomes. Assessments are set by City Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out. This Apprenticeship will involve college attendance and you will also be regularly visited at work by your industry expert trainer assessor from Leicester College, who will support you to achieve the standard required.
