About this course

You will need to have a Signature Level 1 Certificate in British Sign Language or evidence of an equivalent level of competency. Students must attend the Deaf Club once or twice a month and are expected to do homework.

Introduction:
This qualification is designed to develop further the ability to communicate with deaf people using BSL.Please note that this course was formerly known as BSL (British Sign Lanaguage) - Stage 2.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year part-time course lasts for 3 hours per week and will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
You will study the following three units:

  • Unit 1 - BSL 201 Receptive BSL.
  • Unit 2 - BSL 202 Productive BSL.
  • Unit 3 - BSL 203 BSL Conversational Skills.


Assessment:
Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit. Assessment will be undertaken internally by the course tutor and externally moderated by Signature however, one unit is completely externally assessed.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows entry to higher level courses (subject to interview) or to careers working with deaf people. Progression can also be made to higher education with appropriate academic achievements.

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Depending upon your circumstances, you may be able to study for FREE or at a reduced price.
