Why BSc BSc(Hons) Broadcast Audio and Music Technology?
Broadcast sound has a unique place in society. It contributes to the soundtrack of our everyday lives. We hear it in the form of music or supporting in-depth analysis of current affairs, eclectic documentaries, live international events, and literary works in the form of sound-designed drama. Sometimes it is even accompanied by pictures.
The broadcast industry recently predicted a 'critical shortfall' in professionals with specialist sound skills. Understanding new technologies is now vital in addition to traditional techniques. A solid technical knowledge of audio is a requirement for sound specialists in film, radio, TV and games as well as online and mobile media. As a result, numerous opportunities exist for skilled sound professionals with a broadcast background.
Why study this course?
The BSc(Hons) Broadcast Audio and Music Technology has been developed by leading industry figures and partnered with BBC Radio and Music Operations, this course has been designed to address the predicted skills gap in the broadcast industry. Learning from experienced practitioners, you will develop basic engineering skills and study recording techniques and the technological aspects of music. As you progress, you will learn how to apply your creativity to enhance the sound and quality of audio using technology. This is through building a solid understanding of the science of sound, acoustics and recording.
During the first year of this course you'll study at City of Bristol College. You can access UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus and all the facilities and accommodation available to our students. From the second year of your course onwards you'll be based at UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus.

Professional accreditation
This course is accredited by JAMES, the education arm of the Association of Professional Recording Services (APRS) and the Music Producers Guild (MPG). We also have links with the Institute of Professional Sound, and the Association of Motion Picture Sound.

Course programme

Content

You will spend your initial year at City of Bristol College. From the second year of your course onwards you'll be based at UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus.

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Computer Science and Creative Technologies courses, and so you may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation Year. Transfer into the Creative Music Technology course is subject to an audition.

Learning and Teaching

You will be taught by leading industry professionals with extensive experience and networks in the broadcast and music industries. Learning is delivered through a range of methods including lectures, discussion-based seminars, practical workshops and tutorials.

Study time

Lectures, workshops/seminars, group project work and tutoring account for 12 hours of contact time per week. However, you will be expected to spend at least as much time again in essential independent study.

Assessment

We use various methods of assessment to help you develop a range of technical, creative and practical skills. Assessment types include examinations, group presentations, portfolio development and group programme-making activities. You will also get ongoing formative feedback through practical sessions.
