Course programme
During the last two decades we have seen amazing developments in technology which are revolutionizing biology. There has never been a more exciting time to study this fascinating area of science. We now have technologies that allow us to sequence whole genomes, and techniques are being developed to analyse gene function and study gene products. As a result, vast amounts of biological information are being generated very rapidly, and there is great demand for highly trained scientists who can handle this data. In this post-genomic era the challenge is to develop methods that allow us to store, retrieve, analyse and interpret all of this information. The emerging science of bioinformatics encompasses all these activities and makes use of rapidly improving computer technology.
The new Biology and Bioinformatics degree scheme at Aberystwyth explores the exciting advances being made in biology and provides comprehensive training in emerging bioinformatics techniques. The degree will provide you with the skills needed to exploit successfully this new employment niche.
During the first year, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of biology by taking modules covering the structure and function of plants, animals and microbes at the whole organism, cellular and molecular levels. This is combined with initial training in information technology and basic bioinformatics skills. The first year will provide you with a broad biological platform from which to explore the application of bioinformatics.
In your second year in addition to studying Applied Molecular Biology you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of modules including Immunology, Human Genetics and Cancer Biology. These will provide the biological context through which you will investigate key principles in bioinformatics. Dedicated workshops will allow you to gain hands-on experience of the analysis of biological data and to put bioinformatic concepts into practice.
In your final year, specialist modules in the areas of biology which are exploiting bioinformatics will consolidate theory and practice. You will explore functional genomics where high-throughput technologies are being used to investigate gene function. Your final year research project, which provides the opportunity to work in an Institute research group, combines biology and bioinformatics and allows you to develop further your practical and planning skills in an area of your choice.
