Course programme

This course combines real estate surveying with valuation, planning and development. It studies how commercial property markets work and draws upon the economics of the real estate sector to gain knowledge of their operation and development. It also examines how urban planning regulates the development of property and value of real estate as investments. The course allows students to learn about all aspects of property development, valuation and real estate management and to develop a range of technical, communicative and interpersonal skills invaluable to your future career as a chartered surveyor. The Honours course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and you will graduate with both an Honours degree and the means to achieve the highly regarded professional qualification of Chartered Surveyor once you enter the workplace. What you study Year 1 You'll study the technical and legal aspects of property, the property market and economics of property development and valuation. Modules include: Building Design & Technology 1 Building Engineering & Construction Maths Surveying 1: Measurement Property & Construction Business Law Principles of Economics One option module, such as Intro to Modern Architecture or Intro to Contemporary Architecture Year 2 You'll study the technical aspects further, along with an introduction to planning and valuation. Modules include: Building Economics Building Design & Technology 2 Planning & Development 1 Surveying 2 (Property Management) Valuation 1 One option module, such as Intro to Contemporary Architecture, Scottish Legal System , Intermediate Economics, Managerial Finance, Personal Investment and Portfolio Planning, Introduction to the Financial Services Sector Year 3 You'll be provided with an in-depth knowledge of real estate appraisal: investment and development, as well as specialist and statutory valuation. You'll also examine how urban planning regulates the development of property and value of real estate. Modules include: Surveying (Conservation) Development Appraisal Planning & Development 2 Investment Appraisal Valuation 2: Specialist and Statutory Valuations Planning & Development 3 Year 4 You'll focus on the sustainability of property development and valuation. Modules include: Project Evaluation: multi discipline professional project Sustainable Development Valuation 3 Dissertation Students of this course are eligible for the RICS Commercial Property Group and the RICS Valuation Group dissertation prize. This course has been designed specifically to meet the needs of employers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), yet has an educational base that is sufficiently flexible to allow maximum career opportunities. Graduates can work in the private, public and voluntary sector.
