Course programme

The Business Information Technology Degree concerns methods and technologies that can be used to create effective IT systems as solutions to business problems. In the past this demanded a strong emphasis on programming, but technological advances mean that we can now use pre-existing tools as ‘building blocks' to build effective applications with minimal programming. This enables a clear focus on business needs and on the process of building business applications.

The Business Information Technology degree emphasises analysing business requirements and translating them into business systems made from standard software building blocks.

The Business Information Technology degree gives a firm foundation in computing and business analysis skills, including:

  • Web programming
  • Systems analysis
  • Commercial database applications
  • Database management systems

It also emphasises specialised skills in the following areas:

  • Business Process engineering
  • E-commerce systems
  • Web tools selection
  • Commercial aspects of using Information Technology
  • Design of commercial database applications
  • Internet Security

Final year projects

Recently completed final year projects by our students include:

  • Contact Management System: an online business application to allow sales and marketing people to keep records and appointments with customers.
  • A hotel booking system, again built using tools available on the web. The booking system is itself a building block that can be downloaded and incorporated in further websites.

Additional information

Career opportunities: The Business IT scheme produces graduates with a good understanding of the demands of the commercial world for computer systems and a professional approach to building those systems from standard database, web and office components. The scheme will provide you with an advantage when applying for jobs involving: • Building commercial systems using different tools and building blocks • Using analytic techniques to introduce IT into business problem solving • Providing database and web-enabled commercial solutions.
