BSc Computing and Information Systems

There is increasing awareness of a gap of understanding and communication between technical computing specialists and business management. The former often do not understand business processes while the latter frequently lack awareness of the threats and opportunities brought by changing levels of computer systems use. A new breed of technically competent management, able to comprehend management requirements for the organisation in business terms and lead a team of technical professionals in providing Information Systems solutions that meet those needs can span this gap.

The BSc in Computing & Information Systems is designed to give you a thorough grounding in all aspects of computing in order to prepare you for business and make you aware of the enormous range of computer applications, from mathematics, statistics and theoretical computer science to business computing.. The programme will give you the fundamental skills needed to become an information systems professional.

It aims to give you The degree, designed for a wide range of students, including those who wish to pursue a career in management, software engineering or computer programming, based on a strong technical competence in information systems, and also those who wish to move on to study for higher degrees in the computing and information technology area.

Course Content
Students commence with:

LEVEL 1:
Four compulsory full units below:

- Mathematics for computing
- Introduction to information systems
- Introduction to computing
AND EITHER
- Introduction to computer programming
OR
- Introduction to Java and object-oriented programming

LEVEL 2:
Four compulsory full units below:

EITHER
- Computer programming paradigms
OR
- Programming: advanced topics and techniques (first exam in 2004)
- Telecommunications and computer communications
- Database systems
- Software engineering and development

LEVEL 3:
Eight half units chosen from the following or six half units plus the project valued as one full unit:
- Compilers
- Artificial intelligence
- Neural networks
- Software engineering management
- Human computer interaction
- Mathematical techniques of operational research
- Accounting information systems
- Information systems management
- Decision support and executive information systems
- Electronic Commerce
- Computer Security
- Algorithmic graph theory

Project (compulsory for the award of Honours)

Entry Requirements
To apply for the degree course you must be at least 17 years and any necessary course requirements. There are many other acceptable qualifications, both from the United Kingdom and overseas which the school accepts as satisfying the entrance requirements. You may be asked to provide proof of competence in English (Tests of proficiency in English) acceptable to the school. However, if you do not satisfy the criteria for automatic acceptance we will still consider your application on an individual basis or under our Special Admissions procedures.
