Course programme
Environmental Biology is the study of the way in which plants, animals and microbes interact with each other and their environment. This is an especially dynamic area of work given the influence of current and future climates on organisms and organism interactions.
The Institute is ideally situated for this Environmental Biology degree, with its ready access to a wide range of marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats. It is within easy reach of many National Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest and of the Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire National Parks. These all provide a wealth of interesting locations for you to become familiar with a diverse range of habitats and their associated plants and animals. The close co-operation with the nearby Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Countryside Council for Wales and the Centre for Alternative Technology, together with the recently built suite of tropical and temperate glasshouses, provide excellent facilities for teaching and research.
After your first year of study, the Environmental Biology degree scheme develops as an integrated course which treats selected aspects of this subject in more depth. Students have a chance to study a range of animal, plant, microbial and soil science topics in this broad-based, field-orientated degree programme. Aberystwyth is ideally located for field courses in marine biology and terrestrial ecology. More advanced plant and terrestrial ecology field courses are carried out in the spectacular Picos de Europa, Northern Spain and at the unique limestone pavements of the Burren in Ireland. There are also opportunities for some students to undertake vacation research placements in the Arctic.
Research and individual project work are key elements in the final year, with opportunities to take part in group work whilst studying aspects of climate change or ocean biology, within the context of Environmental Biology. The individual project in your final year in an area of your choice gives you further opportunity to develop field and laboratory skills.
