Introducing your course
Accredited by the Geological Society of London, our BSc Geology is recognised by all major employers and gives you a one-year credit towards Chartered Geologist status.
One of the strengths of our course is the emphasis on fieldwork. You can develop your field-based research skills across the UK and Europe, including exciting and challenging residential field courses in England, Wales, Spain and Tenerife.
Geology has a long history at Southampton, being taught at the University for more than 150 years, and our students have an excellent record in securing work in the field after graduation, whether in further research or specialised Master’s degrees, or in fields as diverse as engineering geology, environmental geology, offshore surveying, mineral or hydrocarbon exploration.
All of our Geology programmes are accredited by the Geological Society of London.

Course programme
Year 1
Year one modules will provide you with a thorough introduction to mainstream geology, assuming no previous knowledge. You must also take one optional module in the year, in addition to your mathematics module in Semester 1, subject to pre-requisites and timetabling.
Semester One
Depending on your background, you will take one mathematics module from SOES1010, MATH1004 or MATH1008.
If you have the International Baccalaureate, Standard Level Maths at grade 6 or higher you may consider selecting MATH1004. If you have Standard Level Maths below grade 6 you should select SOES1010. If you have A-Level qualifications then please click the individual module below for further advice. If you are uncertain then please contact the Programme Leader.
