Entry requirements For 2017 entry onwards: applicants to this programme must have successful completion of either 240 credits at level 4 and 5 with an average achievement of 50% at Level 5, e.g. Foundation Degree in a relevant subject area or an equivalent level 5 professional/non-professional qualification. All students must complete the Bridging Unit if they have achieved a module mark of less than 50% on their level 5 research skills module. External direct entrants without demonstrable research skills achievement will also be required to complete the Bridging Unit. Completion of this unit will ensure that students are still able to commence their studies with confidence. What you will learn Year 1 During your study you will complete two core modules, two optional modules and an extended research project. You will be introduced to leadership theory and develop skills in using and reading statistics applicable to health, social care and community environments. You will be supported to research into an area of theory, knowledge or practice and produce an extended research project in your chosen area. Your skills in creative and critical thinking will be developed throughout the modules. The optional modules which allow you to select appropriate routes to build your degree around skills and knowledge which best suits you, your academic background and your future career. Please note that the list of options offered may change from year to year. What Next Progression into: teacher training i.e. PGCE, a master's degree in social work or related subject area. Programme Benefits The BSc Health and Social Care (Top Up) opens opportunities for careers in health, care and community based organisations and projects in public, private or third sector. Our graduates leave with a set of knowledge and skills in leadership, statistics, creative thinking, critical thinking and an ability to work independently and in groups which will enable career progression through applying these to current or new workplaces. Many students progress onto their top up year already working in the health and social care sectors, but wish to pursue leadership or more senior roles. However graduates can also seek careers in organisations that deliver care of the elderly; drug and alcohol interventions; community care; care of those with learning, physical disabilities or mental health conditions. Health promotion and teaching are additional areas of employment. Learning & Teaching Methods Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. You experience a wide range of learning environments from formal lectures and seminars to workshops, small group work and individual tutorials. Some lessons will be conducted in computer laboratories. There are opportunities to link your learning to your workplace on some modules. Studying at this level involves reading and independent thought to extend your knowledge base.
