Course programme

This course will appeal to you if you are looking for a career in tourism - the world's biggest industry. The course combines in-depth study of the tourism industry at home and abroad with the language skills you will need to work in this exciting and fast-moving industry sector.

A special feature of this course is the study of rural tourism and sustainable tourism within the wider international tourism scene.

Year 1
During your first year, you will study modules in marketing and the business environment together with modules looking at the tourism industry, tourism and recreation in the UK. Year 1 also offers the opportunity to take part in a UK residential study tour.

Alongside this you will study Spanish, either at the beginner's level if you have not studied it to A-level standard, or at the advanced level if you have. Those taking the advanced route also have a choice of additional options covering subjects such as Spanish culture and literature. Either route will prepare you to study Spanish in Year 2 and beyond.

Year 2
Year two includes modules on international tourism development, rural tourism and visitor management. You will also have the opportunity to go on an overseas study tour looking at international tourism in depth. You will also continue to develop your knowledge and abilities in Spanish.

A range of optional modules are also offered, including an industrial placement (six weeks minimum), additional modules in Spanish culture and literature, and other modules of interest.

Year Abroad
You will spend your third year away from Aberystwyth in one or more countries where Spanish is spoken. You can go to any part of the world where Spanish is spoken, including parts of Latin America. Indeed, in past years, we have sent several students to Patagonia, a region which (as is well known) has a close connection with Wales.

You may choose to study for a year at a University or to work as an intern (paid or unpaid) in a company where you will use your Spanish language skills on a daily basis. If you choose the second of these options you are encouraged to work for a tourism company, for example a tour operator, visitor attraction, events management company or a hotel.

Year 4
An important part of the final year is the production of a dissertation on a subject of your choice within the tourism management context. You will be given advice from your tutor on the scope and choice of title for this work.

In addition, final year modules will include strategic planning for tourism and recreation, tourism marketing, visitor attractions management and sustainable tourism. You will continue to develop your knowledge and abilities in Spanish. There is also a range of optional modules for you to take.
