Building Control Surveyors are highly trained and experienced members of the local authority and Built Environment profession. They are usually Corporate Members of Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB), Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) and/or Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor (RICS). They are property professionals who provide diverse services and offer impartial, specialist advice on a variety of property development control issues which includes advice on public safety, consumer protection, safety at sports grounds, and dangerous structures. They routinely work with the emergency services and other functions such as Health and Safety Executive, Trading Standards and Environmental Health to deliver safe buildings.
As a Building Control Surveyor, you will be part of an extensive network of over 3,500 professional public service surveyors responsible for ensuring buildings are safe, healthy, inclusive and efficient, and meet the standards set by the Building Regulations. You will be part of the planning, development and valuation of built environment projects. You will develop a wider understanding of the built environment process required to become a built environment professional/practitioner and have the opportunity to progress both professionally and academically.

Through the combined use of practical and educational experience and support, the Building Control Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship enables you to:
Gain the essential core skills and knowledge of all aspects of built environment management.
Focus on the technologies, law, information management, finance, health and safety, sustainability and consultancy skills needed to deliver projects to professional and to quality standards.
Develop transferable skills in the areas of valuation and appraisal, building surveys and planning law
Develop transferable skills of team working, independent learning, decision making and problem solving
Develop an awareness of and consider the impact and solutions to current management issues in your local authority and the built environment sector
Enhance your skills in construction and built environment relate projects, management of people and resources, leadership skills.
On completion of the programme, as a Building Control Surveyor you will act on behalf of clients or employers to provide professional services as a Public Service building control surveyor, Public Service planning and development building control surveyor, or consultant (Professional). In this capacity your role will include, but not limited to:
Providing professional advice and recommendation to local authority clients relating to land, property or construction
Managing local authority client instructions from engagement to completion
Enforce the Regulatory Framework within a local authority area to ensure the long-term safety, inclusivity and performance of buildings in your communities.
Deliver impartial and professional building control services throughout England and Wales.
Liaising with other professionals
Follow due-diligence in providing advice to local authority clients
Undertaking detailed inspection of building and building sites
Analysing information from inspections or visits to buildings, land and construction sites
2020 Entry
Entry to the course will be via successful completion of the Local Authority Building Control (level 4-5 ) qualification as part of the LABC/University of Wolverhampton ‘Articulation agreement’
Successful completion with credit profile of a Foundation Degree in a cognate area deemed equivalent to 240 credits of level 4 and 5 study (minimum of 120 level 5) or equivalent qualifications which will be considered on a case by case basis.

"Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), having been judged to meet the CIOB Education Framework. Prospective members holding these qualifications have full academic exemption and may enter CIOB membership without the requirement for an Individual Assessment."
Through the programme, you will develop the skills, knowledge, behaviours and an appreciation to address a wide range of issues and to lead and work with others in the delivery of successful projects. You will be supported by local authority your employer and a skills coach on the programme. Course content includes elements of work-based learning, pre-contract studies, on-site decision making, management and liaison with clients, construction professionals and operatives.

Building Pathology
The principal aim of this module is to develop your knowledge and understanding of building and material failure. The intention is to bring together the practical and theoretical issues relating to the causes of failure, the consequences and remedies in relation to the duties and obligations of a practising Chartered Building Surveyor.
fire Safety
The principle aim of this module is to develop your knowledge and understanding of building control matters. The intention is to bring together the practical, theoretical and processes associated with discharging the building regulations under the Building Act 1984. Including the interpretation and understanding of legislation, approved documents and regulations.
Workbased Learning B
The principle aim of this module is to enable you, as a part-time student to carry out a critical review of the knowledge management strategy of their organisation and further evaluate a project, of which you have personal experience in terms of the outcome and alternative options which could have been adopted.
YEAR 6
Accessibility and safety at aports Stadia
The principle aim of this module is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the design, development and implementation of accessible environments across the domestic and commercial built environment. Additionally the module will develop your knowledge and understanding of the importance of design, development and management of safety at sports stadia. The intention is to bring together the practical and theoretical issues including the consequences and regulatory legislation that surrounds access and egress and safety at sports stadia
Built Environment Dissertation
This module aims to develop your ability to research and report on a subject related to your degree course. It facilitates the identification and solving of a selected problem or exploration of a chosen issue using well founded research methodology; and presentation of the results of such investigation in a formal report format.
Sustainability
This module enables you to explore the requirements of sustainable development to see how these affect and influence the range of environmental services required in sustainable construction and, furthermore, it highlights the impact of such services on the internal and external environment.
