About this course

Throughout this course, you’ll be introduced to a variety of topics that are fundamental to the running of any business. You’ll also gain a crucial understanding of the wider context that businesses operate in, whether economic, technological or social.

The first year (after your foundation year) lays the foundations of your business knowledge by covering fundamental topics such as marketing, business intelligence and professional development. At the end of the first year, you’ll have developed an understanding of how organisations function through their staff, through data analysis and through their relationship with the wider, global economy.

The second year builds on this basis by covering specific topics across the management spectrum, including business law, finance and project management. This is complemented by modules that introduce an ethical framework for business, looking at corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability in particular.

In the final year, you’ll learn how to apply these core building blocks of business in practical projects – a management report and dissertation – as well as through modules that address wider questions about entrepreneurship and the changing nature of business in the 21st century.

At the end of your degree, you’ll not only have a practical understanding of how businesses operate on a day-to-day basis but a deeper awareness of the role that businesses play in society and the professional tools to enter a managerial career or start your own business.

This course will teach you specific, practical skills that are directly applicable to potential careers, while giving you a broad enough education to remain flexible and adaptable to different industries. The course also incorporates teaching in entrepreneurship that will be valuable for students who want to start their own businesses – our very own Knowledge Dock is an on-campus resource that can help you incubate your business ideas and secure funding.

The structure of the course ensures you will be exposed to the principles and practice of various business functions; from human resources and finance, to marketing and business law. This breadth of topics ensures you’ll have a highly sought-after skillset, and accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute ensures those skills are relevant and attractive to employers.

Our location in East London gives us access to some of the most iconic, innovative and dynamic businesses in the world; from the established financial centre of Canary Wharf, to booming Stratford and the surrounding area known as the ‘Silicon Roundabout’. We host events, conferences and workshops at UEL in partnership with many of the businesses that are right on our doorstep and give students the opportunity to gather experience and contacts during their degree.

This business-led approach extends all the way through the course, with the opportunity to learn from business leaders in the region, visit local organisations and network with professionals.

This accredited course will thoroughly prepare you for a senior or managerial role in a variety of industries. We place emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching, allowing you to develop a wide range of employability skills through experience and training. We also have a superb employability team that works with students to find placements, projects, graduate schemes and full-time employment, combining careers advice with practical training in interview technique and CV writing.
