The transfer of the public health portfolio to local government has given Environmental Health Practitioners (EHP) an important role in helping to improve public health and reduce health inequalities. This module explores the historic context of public health from the outbreaks of Cholera in the 1800's right up to contemporary issues today including Ebola; smoking cessation; tackling alcohol dependency; nutrition and improving diet as well as other day to day issues contributing to health and well-being. Students will consider the benefits of collaborative work, leadership and building alliances to maximise outcomes with reducing resources. For example this might be partnership work with Public Health England, NHS or other public health professionals. The module will also consider how EHPs can contribute to policy and strategy development, developing and assessing the effectiveness of interventions and assessment of the population’s health and well-being. At the heart of the module will be the role of the EHP in health protection including preventing the transmission of communicable disease and protecting against health impacts from exposure to environmental hazards from a range of sources including poor housing, the work environment and air quality.
Module: 4EH001
Credits: 20
Period: 1

The module presents baseline knowledge of the core components of the natural environment and develops an understanding of their inter-relationships. In adopting a systems and processes approach to the functioning of the planet, students will be able to define how the various components of the natural environment interact with each other and combine to influence the landscape in which we live. The module is thus both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, and will allow students to build models and create ideas about the natural environment on local, regional and global scales. Key concepts will be appraised and investigated so that processes and systems in the natural environment can be evaluated. A correlation between the relevance of the natural environment and links to issues of environmental health will be developed at each stage of the module.

The module provides intermediate training and skills development appropriate for practical investigations related to the human and the physical environment. The module introduces a range of analytical techniques including social survey techniques, health and safety investigations, field-based environmental data collection and laboratory-based analysis of data. The practical considerations and sampling design issues associated with collection of field-based data will be addressed in association with the planning of independent/small group research activity. This will include the relevant planning preparation for undergraduate project work.

This module will introduce a variety of concepts and issues associated with sources of pollution, but more importantly will evaluate how such problems can either be managed effectively or avoided in the first place. Topics in this module will include contaminated land, water and air pollution, sustainable energy generation, noise pollution, waste management and environmental legislation relating to pollution.

With the 2007 ‘English House Condition Survey’ indicating that as many as 7.7million dwellings fail to meet national standards for decent homes, the scene is set for a detailed investigation of housing quality. This module therefore explores the role of environmental health officers with respect to housing. It does so by discussing contemporary housing conditions and by describing housing types, housing markets and institutional structures. The module also analyses aspects of housing development by appraising the planning system, different construction techniques, formal building standards and energy efficiency measures. In addition to house building practices, the module will examine housing and neighbourhood improvement processes, including assessment practices, and potential responses, such as improvement grants, area renewal and approaches to homelessness. Finally, the module will introduce the application of housing law and enforcement procedures by examining inspection processes, potential management options and formal legal proceedings.
