About this course

Year 1 introduces you to key aspects of animal, plant and microbial biology, as well as fundamental principles of biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. A key theme is in – depth practical work which gives you confidence in manipulating organisms, cells and molecules.
Year 2 explores the genetics and molecular biology of living cells in more depth, as well as the origins and evolution of life. It investigates how DNA has been used to solve crimes via DNA profiling and examines how the structure of protein relates to its function. All of this is supported by extensive practical experience, in particular in gene cloning and characterisation, and PCR, to equip you for the scientific workplace.
In Year 3, you can either undertake a work (sandwich) placement or progress directly to your final year. In the final year you are becoming an independent scientist. You will study advanced aspects of DNA sequence characterisation, including bioinformatics. The most important and enjoyable work of the final year is your research project. From a wide range of projects and supervisors you choose an exciting topic to research in the laboratory.
