For the first time in human history, over 50% of people around the world live in cities. The expanding growth of megacities (currently 28) is leading to the creation of megaregions. All urban environments impose pressure upon the environment; however, climate change will test the resilience of our current infrastructure beyond anything experienced so far. Climate change also presents us with challenging opportunities.

This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required for the future green economy – enabling increased efficiency of resource use whilst creating more equitable communities. You will study how sustainable solutions can be incorporated into the infrastructure of our built environments, such as integrated transport systems, energy efficient buildings, urban villages, brownfield development, and green technology, including green roofs and sustainable urban drainage systems.

About this course

The course is composed of modules from Architecture, Construction, Environmental Health, Engineering as well as Geography. Notable key modules include Climate Change,  Sustainability and Smart Cities, consecutive geo-spatial modules Geography of the Urban Landscape (level 4), The Digital Environment (level 5) culminating in Geo-BIM (level 6) and the final-year site-specific research module, Brownfield Regeneration. In addition, there is a bespoke module by the Centre for International Development and Training.

The course draws upon a diverse array of learning activities and assessment methods. Your teaching and learning will comprise of lectures, site visits, field trips, guest lectures from practising key professionals, as well as use of analytical and computer laboratories. There may also be the possibility of a placement in a partner institution in North America.

The design of the urban environment is key in the UK and internationally as regeneration of urban areas becomes critical. There is an historic perspective to Urban Development linked to Physical and Human Geography and aspects of these will be studied including the factors that effect the decision making process in Urban Deveolopment such as siting, resources and transport. The application of newer technologies will be introduced and related to case studies. Within this module you will investigate some of the available technologies previously and currently used in the support of urban design. We will look at mapping and planning as well as visualisation tools. The links from Digital Mapping to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to support urban planning approaches will also be drawn.

The module presents an integrated introduction to geography. This will be undertaken by presenting the history and development of the subject and so provide an understanding of the core concepts, key knowledge and interpretation of the discipline. Integral to such an approach is the consideration of both human and physical geography. From this knowledge base students will be able to understand and apply the techniques and skills associated with the ‘geographical perspective’ in a variety of settings and contexts.

The module presents baseline knowledge of the core components of the natural environment and develops an understanding of their inter-relationships. In adopting a systems and processes approach to the functioning of the planet, students will be able to define how the various components of the natural environment interact with each other and combine to influence the landscape in which we live. The module is thus both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, and will allow students to build models and create ideas about the natural environment on local, regional and global scales. Key concepts will be appraised and investigated so that processes and systems in the natural environment can be evaluated. A correlation between the relevance of the natural environment and links to issues of environmental health will be developed at each stage of the module.

Pollution of the urban environment is perhaps one of the most important issues that must be addressed by people and governments in the 21st century. This module introduces a variety of concepts and issues associated with sources of pollution, but more importantly will evaluate how such problems can either be managed effectively or avoided in the first place. Topics in this module will include contaminated land, water and air pollution, sustainable energy generation, noise pollution, waste management and environmental legislation relating to pollution.

Climate change is the most significant challenge facing humanity. Cities have a crucial role to play since, whilst occupying only 3% of the planet they produce over 70% of greenhouse gases. On one hand they are vulnerable to the threat of climate change, espcially the world's major coastal cities, yet they also provide opportunties for significant sustainable measures to be implemented. The phenomenon of smart cities around the world provides examples whereby people can increase their quality of life at the same time as reducing their environmental impact.

The analysis of geospatial data will be examined through the use of the complementary technologies of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. The module is biased towards practical work and this is supplemented by supporting lecture material. Training will be provided in the use of image processing [ERDAS Imagine] and GIS [ArcGIS] software to manipulate, analyse and communicate geospatial information.
